The Situation

September 30, 2010

I am focusing my blog on the unjust and un-needed budget cuts to the California State Park system. With the recent recession, massive state debt, and decades of underfunding, the states parks are in trouble. Recently, Governor Schwarzenegger recommended eliminating $70 million in funding for 2010, and an additional 143.4 million in 2011. These proposed cuts would result in the immediate closure of more than 220 parks all across the state.

THIS CANNOT HAPPEN.

The state parks are not only a vital part of the California’s economy, but also play a great part in the influx of tourists each year. California is gifted with some of the most beautiful scenery and state parks in the nation, and we cannot allow them to be closed.

We as concerned Californians must do something about the eminent closure of our pristine recreational areas. We must take action by speaking out against the budget cuts and supporting key legislature like Proposition 21 in this November’s upcoming election.

I am deeply passionate about this issue because I am an avid outdoorsman and have spent some serious time in the very mountains and parks that are in danger of being closed. These budget cuts don’t only effect the small out of the way parks, but also several state beaches and national monuments including the California State Governors Mansion.

See how you will be affected; check out a list of state parks up for closure around you.
